Port Necles now has a recognized Lions Club, the last official step in the organization being taken at the charter night banquet held in the Anderson Building Friday night. Eighty people were served at the banquet. There was a delegation of some twenty-five or thirty from Port Arthur, the sponsoring club of the local organization. There was also delegations from the Beaumont and Sour Lake clubs. The latter club held their charter night program on Thursday night of this week. The banquet was prepared and served by the ladies of the Baptist church, and guests declared it was one of the best meals they had ever seen served at an affair of this kind. Mrs. A. L. Boyd was chairman of the committee that had charge of this part of the program. As the guests assembled they were given paper caps made in the Lions colors, purple and gold, and carrying banners and the bands, “Port Neches Lions Club—This is my night to Roar.” They loaded on trucks and paraded throug the business district of Nederland and Port Neches, and returning to the banquet hall they filed in and the formal part of the program was begun. A. E. Scott, the president of the Port Arthur club presided, and Jim Russell, Lion Tanner and Paul Davis, Tail Twister of the Port Arthur club were very much in evidence. Several musical numbers were rendered during the meal. _Mrs. E. V. Wright played the accompani ments, and also furnished,a most enjoyable piano solo. There was a solo from Mr. Keeling and a num ber from a quartette composed of Messrs. Keeling, Harrison, Callendar and Gibson. Beth Rhymes gave a dialect read ing and responded with an encore. The address of welcome was from Lion Mayor J. W. Baker. This was followed by short talks from mem bers of the visiting clubs. Sam S. Soliinsky of Beaumont spoke for the Beaumont club. Judge J. D. Camp bell also of Beaumont made a short talk, and H. J. Mercer had a few words to say for the Port Arthur Mrs. James H. Heslar returned Friday from Houston where she underwent an operation. She was accompanied by Mrs. James McNeill who was with her in Houston Club. J. L. Johnson, president of the new Sour Lake Club brought greetings from that body. B. E. Quinn of Beaumont also made a short talk. Several musical numbers were fur nished by Thacker and Patrick. The presentation of the charter was made by Deputy District Governor A. C. Kater of Houston, and the ac ceptance speech was from Lion Pres ident W. H. Fortney of Port Newhes tion to Secretary E. M. Wilkerson, Lion Tamer George Thomas and Tail Twister M. W. Oakley. The first official act of the new club was to endorse the claim of Port Arthur for the district convention in 1930. The convention is meeting for this year in San Angelo next month.
