The devout divines and even the sanctified Smithies might have hard work to convince the Prince of Peace that they really were on His biggest business when they knocked out the hopes and aspirations of three ambitious aliens.The Rip-saw knows that there is much bigger and more dangerous game to be hunted dowrn in Duluth than jitneys between New Duluth and Oliver.Only a few weeks ago, a nasty, j rotten, impudent redlight dump flourished right under the shadow of the Central high school. They tried, all right, but they failed signally.At the election this year, August Omtvedt was candidate for mayor and he was elected by an overwhelming majority. With him went five socialist aldermen out of seven, so he has a good working majority, and the two non-socialists are men who worked with them on the council for six years.Thus it comes that while in 1917 the first of April was the last of August (as city clerk), this year the first of April was the first of August (as mayor). And the one who laughs last laughs besthalf of Raleigh street's population was drunk. The former merchantoffered $50, or one full case of booze, for return of the stimulant or information as to who stole it, but nothing was doing.Gary and New Duluth fairly float in booze. The wops out there are grumbling because some of the authorities are charging them so. heavily for illegal privileges. You can find booze, gambling and immoral women with one eye shut. If you look closely enough, you may find several white women living with black men. Such was the case few months ago.A few licensed busses might move away some of those undesirables, rather than bring them in. Oliver is credited with having recently opened a couple of redlight dumps, therefore travel will be that way rather than this way.When a former humane officer and then chief of police was shown up as a moral leper, not a word of approval was offered by the men who kick on licensing three little jitneys. They apparently prefer to strain at gnats and swallow camels, so to speak.Not since this great family journal was started over two years ago have voices of these lawyers and clergymen been raised in approval of efforts to help Duluth become a sober, moral, clean, decent place in which to live and rear families. Not a voice has been lifted up in protest against blind pigs, blockade runners, redlight dumps, panderers, crap shooters or corrupt public officials. These things have existed and to* spare and are more of a menace than three little jitneys carrying men between New Duluth and Oliver.Incidentally,. voices of the commissioners have been lifted up entirely too seldom and loudly. Some have not cared. Others have not wished to joggle Onkel Bernard. Others, apparently, went to sleep at the switch.To a man up a tree it looks as if Bro. Smithies, or some other chap in good church standing, should blow a few blasts on his ram's horn, thereby lining up the Soldiers of the Cross and the real followers of the Lord of Hosts.The walls of innumerable and immoral little Jerichos within this great city most profitably can be tumbled down.S\
