THEY TERRORIZE THE RESI DENTS OF DUNBAR. A Posse of Citizens Scour the Moun tains—One Encounter in Which Several Shots Were Fired—Bill Turner of Cooley Gang Fame the Leader. Dunbar, April 5.—Dunbar has been in a state of excitement for the past twenty four hours caused by a band of outlaws that has been operating here and are lo cated in the mountains back of Ferguson station. A few nights ago the drug store of McDowell Hardy was burglarized and several hundred dollars worth of goods stolen, and other places were also entered the same night. Wednesday night the residence of William Bowden was entered and provisions taken and an attempt made to gain an entrance to the residence of Superintendent McCreary of the Dunbar furnace, Tuesday word was received here by the officers that traces of the goods that had been taken from the drug store were found near Ferguson station and that sev eral suspicious characters had been seen the night before near the works and were seen leaving for the mountains about day break. John McDowell and T. Blair Pal mer went to Ferguson at once and found some empty boxes, bottles, etc., that had been taken from the drug store. They then started in search of the men, who, they supposed, had taken refuge in some of the empty clay banks two miles from Ferguson. They had not proceeded for when they discovered the bandits. Several shots were fired by the fugitives who then fled. Their pursuers, being lightly armed, did not venture an attack but returned to Dunbar. Yesterday morning Constable A. C. Duncan of the borough, and John Cole, constable of Dunbar township, formed a posse of citizens and armed with Winchester rifles and revolvers, went in search of the outlaws. The whole coun try for several miles around was scoured on the posse but they were unable to locate their men, although traces of them were discovered at several places. They were obliged to return to town empty handed. Had the posse gone twelve hours sooner they would likely have taken the men but the latter got wind of the pursuit and made way. Yesterday evening some citi zens living in the mountain came across the outlaws, who made them hold up their hands and after searching them compelled them to leave. The men came to Dunbar and reported to the officers what occurred and steps were at once tak en to form a posse and run the outlaws down and take them dead or alive. Early this morning the party heavily armed and mounted started for Irishtown, where they will divide and scour the mountain. The members of the posse are: Officers Duncan, Cole and Wilgus, Jacob Miller, John McDowell, James Harber, Will Cam eron and Stark Dean. The band of rob bers numbers four and from their work are not new hands at the business. They are supposed to have a retreat in the mountains where they have their goods concealed. The head of the gang is Bill Turner, famous for his connection with the Cooley band whose robberies and raids are familiar to every citizen of the county.
