PLAINFIELD. The Reform Club met at the Congrega tional Church on last Monday evening, and the question, “Resolved, that the signs of the times indicate the sure final tri umph of the temperance cause in Illi nois,” was discussed by Mrs. Young, Mrs. First and Rev. 8. R. Beggs. In the affirma tive, and Mrs. Dresser and J. H. Stehmar in the negative. On Friday evening the Universalist folks held a concert and sociable in their church. It was well attended and all had a pleasant time. The Methodist Sabbath school elected the following officers on Sunday: Super intendent, ‘. H. Evans; assistant super intendent, J. D. Shreffler; secretary, Thos. Haye; treasurer, T. Thompson ; librarian, C. Van Olinda. Rev. H. Messner, of the Evangelical church, preached his farewell_sermon_to a large and appreciative audience on Sunday evening last. He has left for conference. At the school meeting in District No.1 N.S. Hamlin was re-elected director. In District No. 2 Frank Hyland was elected in place of A. Hemstreet. The directors of District No.1 are re pairing the fences surrounding the school yard. Will Gascoigne in erecting a barn. Will has secured the contract for carrying the mail between here and Joliet. Schools have opened in the village. Miss Lettie Smiley, is teaching in District No. 2; J. H. Brehman and Miss Ward, of Joliet in District No. 1. Croquet is all the rage now. Rev. J. W. Phillips is the champion archer of the village, but then he owns the only outfit in the place. Hunter, the Joliet coal dealer, has erected coal sheds here, and will soon have coal for sale. Col D. A. Dishman was laid up with rheumatism for a few days. H. A. Toushendeau is an efficient bar ber, and also the most efficient corpora tion clerk we have had for some time. He is a terror to peddlers. It takes a smart chap to evade him when he is after a license fee. Dr. B J. Emigh visited Aurora the other day. Isaac Heary is putting up a new house. Tom Hayes is at present practising— with an ax and saw. SOMEONE. The coughing and wheezing of persons troubled with bromchitis or the asthma is ex cessively harassing to themselves and annoy ing to others.
