The Grovermnenthad previous notice of those meetings, and of the intentions of both parties, and sent a formidable force both of military and policet-l~ I into the county, consisting of a troop of the13th Light Dragoons, and 60 additional police; these were sent to Downpatrick.On yesterday . morning, about 1,500 persons, in separate divisions, left this neighborhood in\procession for Crossgar, a village containing about 1,000 inhabitants, and distant/4 1-2 miles from this townfcon the Belfast road. Those were,afterwardx-dl-aaXTalis[ef-i-joined in (jlrossgar by upward of 3,500 men from other localities—in all about 5,000persons.' On the arrival at Crossgar of thefirst party, a general attack was made onthem by the Orange party who had preconcerted their; plan -of action. The -fightcommenced most furiously, when W. R.Anketell, Esq. .J. P. with a strong body of police, about 60 in all, got between the parties, and whileJMr. Anketell was reading the * riot act he was struck with a stone onrea-ofS-ree-QSlieerh-rcees9h-n-o-tieasthe head, and a ball from a gun passed thro’ the lapel Of bis coat near his breast. Atthe same moment apoliceman named Burke was shot dead, the ball passing through hishead. It is not known from which party those shots were fired'. The police then fired upon the Catholic party about 80 or 100 shots, which were returned by, the Catholics ; one female and one man were shot dead, and many were wounded. The police then, retired, having one killed and seven wounded. The Orange party were driven out of town by the Catholics andpursued fof some distance.A troop of the 13th Light Dragoons anda company of the 13th regiment, also astrong body of police, left Downpatrick forthe scene of riot, and arrived in Crossgarabout 3 o’clock P. M. The Roman Catholic party had determined to proceed ina body to Downpatrick in triumph, but through the exertions of Mr. Anketell and others of influence, they were .persuaded o-therwise, and quietly returned to tljeir respective localities. ■Reported Massacre of Prisoners at Carraeas.
