Husband, wife dieArgument ends in fatal shootingsBy BARRY GANTENBEINAn estranged Indiana couple’s apparent attempt at reconciliation ended in tragedy Friday morning in Crete.Police believe Kenneth Clinton, 60, of Cedar Lake, Ind., shot and killed himself after taking a handgun and shooting his wife, Betty J. Clinton, 55, also of Cedar Lake, Ind., in a house at 121 East Exchange street where Mrs. Clinton’s daughter lived.Clinton was pronounced dead at the scene. His wife was transported by ambulance to St. James Hospital medical center, Chicago Heights, where she died Friday evening of the gunshot wounds.THE COUPLE had been separated for several weeks, and Mrs Clinton had been staying in the home her daughter rented in Crete since the couple’s falling out, according to police.Police were called to the Exchange street home Friday by a resident who reported hearing gun shots shortly after nine a m.“We received a call this morning that a man was shooting a woman at this address. A resident was in another room of the house and heard several gun shots,” Andrew Weg-mann, an investigator with the Crete police department, said Friday at the scene.“It was a husband and a wife; they appeared to be in the process of separation,” Wegmann said.A MEMBER OF the family confirmed that the couple had separated, but the relative did not know the cause of the argument that ended with the shooting “They were separated a couple of weeks. I kept out of their problems and they kept out of mine,” the family member said.“She was spending the night with her daughter. He was there all night, loo.
