By Stew ZweikoftLast week, Plattsburgh State had an excellentconcert featuring Wishbone Ash and Steve Miller.Wishbone Ash opened the show and from the very first note they proved that they are truly a great band. The opening piece Time Was from the Argus album was superbly done and included some incredible guitar work from Andy Powell. The band played on incredibly, doing other numbers from the Argus album including Warrior, and Throw Down theSword. Then on The King Will Come it was TedTurner's turn to play lead guitar and he did an excellent wah-wah break. The rhythm section of Martin Turner on bass and Steve Upton on drums stayed incredibly tight and their vocals as well were excellent, especially the harmonies. They closed their set with Feelings from their first album and Ted Turner played excellently. They then encored with some old rock n' roll songs which were excellently done. The evening also included some of the numbers fromWishbone Ash's new album and these too were excel I entl y done. Wishbone Ash are in my opinion one of the best bands around and I wish them more success.►Since I was so overwhelmed by Wishbone Ash'sperformance 1 feel it would be impossible for me to write a fair review of Steve Miller. Therefore I havekallowed a friend who was with me to review them, would just like to add that I think Steve Miller is one of the best white blues singers and he proved it on BluesWith A Feeling. However, because both my friend and I were near the very front we could not hear much of anything but Miller's guitar.By Richard Kelly Contrary achieved by Wishbone Ash, the Steve Miller Band proved to be something of a disappointment. Although Miller started out nicely on an acoustic guitar, the sheer volume of his electric guitar drowned out the vocals and the rest of the instruments in his band, where I was sitting. After a nice little April Fool's introduction, Steve Miller opened his part of the concert with a beautiful half-hour acoustic set, drawing on some of his older songs as the highlights. All the songs were done excellently, but this reviewer's personal favorites were Kow Kow Calqulator, and Going to the Country.Once Miller picked up his electric Fender, it was sheer volume which dominated the show, rather than vocals and the instruments. The sheer volume ofMiller's guitar completely drowned out the organ, and almost did the same to bass, drums, and vocals.During My Dark Hour when the other members of the band were given solo shots, Miller kept playing during organist Richard Thompson's spot so that the volume of the organ was not much louder than it had been during the rest of the set, which was just about nil. Credit must be given to bassist Gerald Johnson whoturned in an excellent performance during the entire#set.♦Steve Miller is an excellent guitarist, and he provedit with some of his playing Sunday night. It's a shamethat Miller allowed this one aspect to overshadow allelse in the show, especially since many of his songshave an intrinsic beauty all their own.
