RED OAK JUNCTION Sometime in July of 1869 Red Oak Junction was incorporated as a town. Counting every building in view there were 50 structures on the town site. It.was said that this new town did not really deserve the title; nevertheless, second only to Deadwood, it was known as the toughest town in the West. This was a period of reconstruction following the cruel and debilitating Civil War. It was an era of rug-; ged individualism, hoe downs, bob sleds, wild turkey shoots, no cla.ss distinctions, an atmosphere of live and let live, and the county board was paying a bounty of ten cents each for gopher scalps. The people were restless and migrant, but strong religious convictions inspired many of the settlersr . —There were several churches in the vicinity but in Red Oak Junction there were only two established churches - the First Baptist Church and the First Methodist Church, with the First Presbyterian established in June of 1869,During this past year both the First United Methodist Church and the United Presbyterian Church have observed their Centennials in Red Oak with special services, so we give below a brief history of these two.
