Wilson will be the place to be! We kick off spring with the Theatre of the Amer ican South. Now in its fifth year in Downtown Wil son, this top notch theatrical festival will boast amazing on-stage performances at the Boykin Cultural Center, the Lauren Kennedy and Alan Campbell Theatre (which is the new black box theatre on the Barton Col lege campus), and at Sweet Maria’s Bistro. The perfor mances this year are “The Member of the Wedding,” “Concord Virginia” and “Shiloh Rules.” Addition ally, the festival, which runs from Thursday through Sunday the last three week ends in May, includes a vari ety of other exciting events, such as special speakers, BBQ bashes, cooking dem onstrations and gospel services. To complement this fine festival, downtown galleries, stores and eater ies will be hosting the first annual Spring Fling — a Gallery, Restaurant Shop Hop on the last three Sat urdays in May from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., the 15th, 22nd and 29th. We hope to see you out supporting your local downtown businesses and cultural arts commu nity, and, in the process, making Downtown Wilson truly vibrant. With such great success last year, Wilson Downtown Development Corporation is happy to be hosting the out door Downtown Alive con cert series again this year. As the absolute the most fun place to be on a Wednes day night in Wilson, these concerts will begin May 19 and will run every other Wednesday through Sep tember. This family friendly concert series will feature many popular bands, such as Spare Change, The Moni tors, The Embers, The Leg ends of Beach and more! There are two other con cert series happening in the Oliver Nestus Freeman Roundhouse. Keep a look out for more information on this, as it will be ! There is still time to catch one more performance of the Boykin Series, present ed by the Arts Council of Wilson. Southern Comedy with Jerry Carrol Larry Weaver will be on Friday, April 16 in the Boykin Cul tural Center. ACT! For Youth will present their one-act plays on April 30, and May 12 at the Boykin Cultural Center. The Congressional Art Exhibit will take place at the Arts Council of Wilson on April 24 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Recent Acquisitions from the Collection of Alan Thomas Jr. will be show cased at the Arts Council galleries from May 6 to June 19. Along with these events, summer camps and activities will begin soon at Imagination Station and the Arts Council of Wilson check their websites for more details. Imagination Station has its free events on Fridays and Saturdays. Fabulous Fridays are held the first Friday of every month and feature a different theme, such as nanodays and egg dropping. Public programs run every Saturday and include a monthly theme, such as weather, chemistry, and physics. ProMusic Con servatory will be hosting a variety of concerts, such as a student recital on April 18 and “Songs of the Earth” on May 16. We are so very thrilled to announce another exciting endeavor! In partnership with the Wilson Farmers Market Association, Wilson Downtown Development Corporation is bringing you a Downtown Farmer’s Market! This will begin on be held at the lot at 207 W. Green Street (kiddy corner for the Jarman House). You will be able to buy home-grown and hand made products from local growers and artisans, as well as grab some lunch from a weekly exclusive food vendor and hear some light entertainment. This is a pilot program, so we are relying on you, the Wilson community, to support this new endeavor. Mark every Wednesday, from May until August, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on your calendar as Downtown Wilson Farm er’s Market Day! On Saturday, May 8, the 2009/2010 Dynamic Lead ership Class of the Wilson Chamber of Commerce is hosting a race called the Wilson Whirli Rank. This will raise money for Buddy Ball, a program for disabled children in the community to play baseball in a positive environment. The race is for walkers and runners ages 14-60+. The race will start and finish at our beautiful downtown park, Paul V. Berry Hickory Grove Park, located at 200 Kenan Street, and will go through down town, out to Barton College and end back at the park. Registration and race check in is at 6:30 a.m. and the race starts at 8:00 a.m. You can register to volunteer, sponsor or enter the race online by going to www.wil sonncchamber.com - it’s for a good cause! Speaking of the Paul V. Berry Hickory Grove Park, take some time this season to enjoy it. Opened just about a year ago, this park features a waterfall and five original Whirligigs created by Wilson’s own interna tionally renowned folk art ist, Wallis Simpson. As I said, this spring and summer, Downtown Wilson will be the place to be!
