SERIOUS CHARGE AGAINST A BRISTOL MANUFACTURER,At Birmingham Sessions yesterday, before Mr. T. S.Roden, Assistant Recorder, William Chivers, cyclemaker, 55, Castle-stsreet, Bristol, was indicted for receiving certain bicycle fittings knowing they were stolen. It was alleged that the prisoner, last Sep* fcember, visited the warehouse of Felix Chapman,Steelhousedaue, Birmingham, and put a pair ofbicycle hubs in his pocket, giving the warehouseman 3s, to maintain secrecy. On other occasions, theprisoner visited Chapman’s warehouse and incitedGough,the warehouseman,to steal goods and bring themto the station, where prisoner received them and gavehim several shillings as compensation. On the 11th ofNovember prisoner wrote to Gough stating that heshould be pleased to see a few bicycle chains, andthat he wanted a bottom lug. It was further alleged that prisoner met Gough in Birmingham, and received eocne logs and chains, for which ho paid Gough 10a*For the defence several witnesses were called, in*eluding a Bristol detective, to prove that the accused bad always borne a good character. It was stated that Chivers had ordered Gough to procure him cheap bicycle fittings from second-hand sales, and the accused had given Gough money for that purpose. Prisoner was acquitted.
