ssDeath of a Well-known Oil Mnn.[Com n ,u n i rated. 1 Several weeks «g,^there occurred, in thecity of Syracuse, his home,the Heath of Benjamin W. Baum, after a long illness, and although long expected by his relatives andfriends, it came to those who were near and dear to him at the last with so sudden shock that we could hardly realize our great loss. He was flt; r many years connected with numerous business interests in Pennsylvania, causing frequent visits here, and will doubtless he remembered long by those who knew him. The following is a copy of notice of one of the papers in the city which was his home:Readers of the Courier will regret to learn of the death of Benjamin Ward Baum,which occurred at 87 Shooard street, at H;Htyesterday afternoon. Mr. Baurn has been out of health for fourteen years, hut his fatal illness began about a year ago.He was born January 3, 1321, in Minden, Montgomery county. He was educated at Ca/.enovia seminary, and, removing with his parents to Cicero, soon after began teaching school, when only fourteen years of age. lie derived a great taste for military matters, probably from the fact that his father, Colonel Baum, was especially active in the militia in early times. In March, IS 12, ho married Cynthia A. Stanton, daughter of Oliver Stanton, Cazenovia. In I8o0 he engaged extensively in the manufacture of butter and cheese. In I860 he went to the oil region in Pennsylvania, being one of the earliest to develop that immense industry. He devoted his best years to that business and amassed a large fortune, (’lose application to business destroyed his health', and in 1872 he was compelled to abandon ail business pursuits. His health since that time has been precarious. Something more than a year ago he was thrown f rom his car-. riage and severely injured, never fully re-• i covering. lie has had nine children, four I of whom died in infancy. His eldest son ^ ! died one year ago. He leaves a widow and ' | four children. Mrs. W. H. Neal, of -this ! city, Mrs. I Brewster, of Weedsport, L mis P. Baum and Dr. Harry C. Baum, both of this city. He has been connected with the Methodist church for many years, being an 1 active member and trustee of theCentennary j Methodist Church Society, and at the organization of that society he contributed , largoiy towards the erection of th * present j chut eh taifice and its support. His energies I were expended in providing a comfortable home f'r his family, and he was a devoted husband and fond and indulgent parent.Kiistpr Service*.
