Mr. Baum has been out ofhealth for fourteen years, but his fatal ill-r-ness began about a year ago.11lie was born January 3, 1321, in Minden,Montgomery countv. He was educated atI Cazenovia seminary, and, removing with bisit parents to Cicero, soon after began teachingschool, when only fourteen years of age. Het derived a great taste for military matters,probably from the fact that his father,nColonel Haum, was especially active in thetmilitia in early times. In March, 1842, bemarried Cynthia A. Stanton, daughter ofOliver Stanton, Cazenovia. In 1850 he engaged extensively in the manufacture ofbutter and cheese. In I8G0 he went to theoil region in Pennsylvania, being one of theearliest to develop that immense industry.He devoted his best vears to that businessand amassed a large fortune. Close appli- Ication to business destroyed his health', andin 1872 he was compelled to abandon ailbusiness pursuits. .His health since thattime has been precarious. Something morethan a year ago he was thrown from his car-| riage and severely injured, never fully re-covering. He has had nine children, fourof whom died in infancy. His eldest sondied one year ago. He leaves a widow andfour children. Mrs. W. II. Neal, of -thiscity, Mrs. I Brewster, of Weedsporf, L uisI '. Haum and Dr. Harry C. Baum, both ofthis city. He has been connected with theMethodist church for manvyears, being anactive memberand trustee of theCentennaryi Methodist Church Society, and at the organization of that societv he contributedlargely towards the erection of th * present chinch edifice and its support. 11 is energieswere expended in providing a comfortable ji home for his family, and he w»s a devotedhusband and fond and indulgent parent.
