Clay Township Democratic Meeting. Pursuant to public notice, a meeting of the Democratic citizens of Clay township, was held in Dulsborough, on Friday, the 3d day of April, 1840. On motion of Mr. Josiah Morehead, the meeting was organized by appointing Mr. WM. L. ABBOTT President,and Ebene zER Reserts and Samven F. Exper Sec retaries. On motion of S. W. Egelston, it was Resolved, That a committee be appoint ed to draft resolutions expressive of the views of the meeting ; and Messrs. Silas W. Egelston, John Bostick, Laban Bramble and Josiah Morehead were appointed said committee. The meeting was then addressed in a ve ry able manner by Col. Pepper and Mr. J. H. Lane, after which the committee re ported the following resolutions, which were unanimously adopted : Resolved, That we believe it the duty of the democratic party in this county to hold a convention through which the peo ple may be heard, and thereby create union and unanimity in the democratic ranks ; and that we are in favor of holding such a convention at Wilmington, on the 16th day of May next. Resolved, That we will appoint eight delegates to represent Clay township in, said convention. Resolved, That we pledge ourselves to abide the result of the convention, and to use all honorable means to secure the suc cess of the nominees. Resolved, ‘That we continue to repose unshaken confidence in the patriotism, firmness and integrity of Martin Van Bu ren for the faithful manner in which he has administered the Government, and partic ularly for his zeal in prosecuting a divorce of the Government and the Banks ; and in Richard M. Johnson for a whole life devo ted to the service of his country in peace and in war. Resolved, That we cordially acquiesce in and join heartily in support of the nomi nations made by the democratic State con vention held at Indianapolis, on the glori ous eight of January last, for Governor and Lieutenant Governor, and for Electors of President and Vice President. Resolved, That we believe the course pursued by the leaders of the federal whig party evinces a determination to accom plish their ends ‘without the least regard to the means employed. ‘ Resolved, That to counteract the vindic tive course pursued by the enemies of de mocracy, we pledge ourselves to stand firm by our principles—the principles of the Jeffersonian school of Republicanism—to combat the enemy with truth and reason, believing that the success of our cause does not require us to pursue any other than a straight forward and honorable course. The following gentlemen were appoint ed delegates to the county convention, with power to fill vacancies: Messrs. Jo siah Morehead, James McClean, Silas W. Egelston, George Grove, Owen B. Legg, Thomas Farran, William L. Abbott, and George Abrams. The meeting was then ably addressed by Col. McCracken and Francis Baldwin, Esq. when, on motion, it was Resolved, That the thanks of this meet ing be presented to the several gentlemen who have addressed us. _ Resolved, That the proceedings of this meeting be published in the Dearborn County Democrat.
