EditorialsVolunteers move mountainsTraveling out Reading Avenue recently, we saw about eight men crawling around on the construction of a new barn, obviously a group effort where several had gotten together to make short work of the project. The same thing can be seen in the Amish community. When a barn needs to be built, families and friends all join together to help one another with the project, making an easier project of a very time consuming effort. And it’s always more fun working on a project with friends than it is to work alone.Once in awhile, we see such a thing happening with farmers in Hillsdale County. A farmer is ill or injured and can’t plant or harvest his crops. His neighbors pitch in, plant or harvest the crops, provide food for the workers, and potential disaster is averted. It’s a true example of people helping people, one of those all-American type things which make life worth living for all of us. We don’t see it happening as much anymore. It used to be a fairly common occurence when settlements were being created and the pioneer spirit existed. People had to do more for themselves then. They couldn’t hire a log home builder, or a barn building crew, as readily as we can today. Nor could theyafford such extravagance. Thanks to the efforts of a local group, we’re seeing a return to the spirit of the pioneers in the building of the new Bailey School playground.Volunteers are being sought to help in the construction of the Hillsdale Creative Play Area, which will benefit not only Bailey students, but all students in the area who play there. The playground committee is planning to construct the playground, with the help of volunteers and the supervision of a New York work crew, the weekend of April 21-24. The more volunteers, the shorter time the effort will take.Tools are being arranged for by the committee, and will be on the site for the construction. Volunteers are needed for skilled and unskilled work crews for playground work, for food preparation to feed the workers, and for child care for children ages 2 to 9 so workers don’t have to worry about babysitters.f By the way, a skilled worker is one who can cut a straight line with a hand-held circular saw.)The committee says the playground will be built in four days, rain or shine. It’s a perfect opportunity for a family to contribute to the community in a beneficial way. If you can help, call 437-7369.Hillsdale Daily News
