‘Some 60 people picketed the Austin police station, 5327 W. Chicago, last Wednesday night to protest the killing of a Negro youth. Michael Hunt, 14, was shot to death March 23, police say, when he failed to heed an order to halt while fleeing the scene of a burglary in the 300 block of N. Lotus. Led by Mrs. Alberto Malicsi, 100 N. Lotus, the group of pickets registered their protest with Commander Victor Vrdolyak and Chief Thomas Noone, who invited them inside the station. Six of the group including Mrs. Malicsi met with Vr dolyak and Noone who, based n the police report, told of the circumstances — surrounding the youth's death. According to the police, Michael and several other tenagers were caught by police who responded to a burglary in progress call at 336 N. Lotus at 9:02 p.m. the evening of March 23. Police said the youth, who was a seventh grade student at Emmet school, 5500. W. Madison, threatened to shoot a policeman when confronted at the scene. The policeman fired ‘on Michael killing him. Police said a stolen pistol ‘was found in Michael's pocket Mrs. Malicsi, a Filipino housewife, who was a friend and tutor of the slain youth, said this couldn't be. “Michael never carried a rance pointed out that ichael was in trouble with the law on several occasions or minor incidents including disorderly conduct, curfew violations and criminal damage to property. Mrs. Maliesi said Michael was a briliant student and had a bright future ahead of him. She said the other kids in the neighborhood looked up to him. Michael, she said, formed his own jazz combo and wrote his own music. His Sensational sour Compo played two of Michael’s compositions at a memorial ‘Mass that was held for him April 1 at St. Thomas Aquinas church, 5112 Washington. At the Austin station, Mrs. Maliesi and the delegation asked that a committee be formed to review cases such as the death of Michael Hunt. They suggested that the committee be comprised of three representatives from the police department and three from the community along with an impartial lawyer to be agreed upon. The group left the station quietly. Mrs. Maliesi said they plan next to attend the inquest into Michael's death which has not been set yet.
