Boy Scout Camp Site Is PurchasedPurchase of 173 acres of camp f ground south of Great Bend for the Boy Scouts has been announced by Charles Gunn, trustee of the C. XL Aldrich estate.Gunn said he signed the purchase papers Tuesday afternoon for the land which is about two _ miles west of Hart’s Comer ] | and was owned by Dale and Ralph Weller. Purchase price, was approximately S21.600.The land is unimproved and will remain that way to provide • Scouts with an opportunity to “rough it” on camping trips. Gunn said the District Camp- ] mg Committee would be respon- . sible for setting up rules and regulations governing the usei , of the camp site. The District* Committee is composed of Scout-1 ers from Barton and Rice , Counties, however the camping. Scouts from Kanza Council and ; elsewhere. j,Gunn said this is an experi-. mental type of camp which is not too common in the United States, but it is seen as a useful adjunct to the camping pro-.1 gram. No structures will be ,; built on the site and it will re-main a “wilderness.” It is also located about five miles from Great Bend which will put it within easy hiking distance of local troops.Money for the purchase was provided by the will of the late C. R. Aldrich who left part of his estate for the use of Girl and Boy Scouts. A large area near Claflin has been purchas-, ed for a Girl Scout camp, and plans to build some type of activity building for both Boy Scout and Barton County Community College use has previously been announced.
