Jeffersonville, Scottsburg, and Salem had their annual get-to gether on the cinders yesterday and the meet turned out to be the best meet of the season as far as records are concerned. Before the afternoon was over ,three new Salem track records had on set and three Jeffersonville High School marks had also been eclipsed. Second Less And on top of jit all, the Salem Coach, Ray Lee, who has been handling the Lion track team for 32 years, absorbed only his second defeat in eight years at the home track. The only team to beat Sal em in the last eight years was New Albany’s Bulldog harriers. The final tabulation found Jack Brogan’s Jeff Red Devil thinlies claiming their third straight vic tory of the season with 67 tallies compared to Salem’s 39 and Scottsburg’s 31.Prior to yester day’s meet both Salem and Scotts burg were undefeated. Salem had knocked off perennially tough Seymour, 68-40, and Scottsburg all disposed of Madison and Aus in. Three New Records : Brogan’s boys set three new re cords during the course of the heated meet. Ray Michael tossed the 12-pound shot 50’9%” to set a new Salem track record and a new Jeffersonville High School re cord. Michael also held the old JHS mark of“ 505%” which he achieved in last year’s Clark County meet. Marvin Allen, the Red Devils’ fleet-footed phenomenon, set new Salem track records in the two clash events and a new JHS mark in the 290. Allen rambled off the 100 in 10.1 and followed up with a 22.6 performance in the 220, breaking his own school record of 23.2 set in the 1957 Clark County ‘meet. The third record-shattering per formance came when Jeff junior Bill Robinson wanted 11/3” in the pole vault,’ smashing ‘the old JHS record of 11’ held jointly by Ro binson, Jerry McCormick, who tied for second yesterday and Bob Carpenter, a Jeff pole vaulter in 1956. Nine Firsts Allen, Robinson, and Michael weren’t the only Red Devil first place finishers. There were four other individual winners and both Satan relay teams came out on top. All told Jeff took home: nine firsts, while Salem took three firsts and Scottsburg one. Bill Dooley was the meet’s only double-winner besides Allen. Doo ley topped the broad jump with a leap of 20.2% and the 440 in 53.6. Jerry Lipo took the high hurdles in 17.2. The Jeffersonville _8809 relay team of Marvin Allen, Leonard Alen, Tommy McLean, and Jerry Hammett outclassed the other schools in 1:38.9. In the mile re lay Jeff came out ahead with Bil Dooley, Tommy MclLean, Arnet Bell, and Dale Campbell, a fresh man, doing the honors in 3:45.2. Weller Caps Mile Scottsburg’s first was Mike Murphy in the 880. Salem first placers were’ notched’ by Bill Smedley in the low hurdles, Jim Thompson in the high jump, and David Wellers in the mile. Weller negotiated the mile in 4:46.2 and finished well ahead of Jeff High’s distance ace, Pat Sullivan.
