TOPPERYeshiva Boy's Haf Poses Big QuestionLAKEWOOD, N.J., (JTA) — A rabbinical student who didn’t want to remove his hat in court, lias been ordered by a local magistrate to appear in court with a definitive answer to an old question—when must a Jew wear his hat, and when may he dispense with it?The question came up when Jonas Werberg of Jamesburg. N. J., was haled into court for careless driving. Men in thecourtroom were ordered to remove their hats, but Werberg, explaining that he was a student at Yeshiva, did not want to remove his hat. Finally he was ordered to do so, but under protest. Magistrate Henry L. Gertner, however, postponed Werberg’s case temporarily.Evidently interested in solving the question once and for all, the magistrate ordered Werberg to appear with a written statement from his superiors at the Yeshiva, explaining whether Yeshiva students must wear their hats even in a courtroom. If that is the religious law, the judge commented, it’s all right with him if Werberg remains covered during the proceedings. He just wants to be sure.o
