The Sul Ross State University Lobos took the lead in the Texas In tercollegiate Athletic Association baseball race over the weekend, taking three of four games from Tarleton State University in Stephenville. The Lobos picked up 8-1, 19-9 and 5-4 wins before blowing an 11-run lead in game four to lose to the Texans 13-12. In the first game, Gus Alvarado tied the game 1-1 in the fourth with a solo homer and then broke the game open in the seventh with a three-run home run. The seventh was the big inning for the Lobos as they picked up a total of seven runs. Jeff Parnell started the rally with a double, and then Brent Harris singled and Darrell Holmes walked. Opie Parsons singled to score the go-ahead run, and George Cantu went to first after he was hit by a pitch. A sacrifice fly by Rio Acosta brought in a run, and then Al varado blasted his homer to clear the bases and finish the scoring. Mike Gonzales pitched a strong game to pick up the win. Gonzales, now 6- 3, pitched a five hitter, and the Texans could only manage one run. While the first game was a pitchers’ duel, the second contest turned into a hitting duel that lasted two days. The game was called in the sixth inning on Friday because of dark ness, and the final inning was played on Saturday. The Lobos picked up three runs in the first with a bases loaded double by Alvarado. Sul Ross added one in the third, two in the fourth and then broke the game open in the fifth with seven runs. By the time the dust had cleared in the final inning Saturday, the Lobos had put 19 runs on the scoreboard to the Texans’ nine. Alvarado continued to lead the Lobo attack with a pair of doubles for six RBIs. John Bowman added two hits for four RBIs and scored three runs. Jeff Price, 6-2 on the season, took the win by scattering seven hits over six innings. Johnny Guerrero came in for the final inning on Saturday as a warm-up for his start in game three. The warm-up inning proved good for Guerrero as he went on to pitch seven innings in the third game, al lowing eight hits. The Lobos began the scoring in the second with three runs. Acosta doubled, Alvarado drove him in and Jeff Parnell brought in Alvarado with a two- run homer. The Texans tied the score in the fourth and took the lead in the fifth before the Lobos came back to win the game on a Manuel Alvarado solo homer and a Burril Daly two out single. In the final game of the series, the Lobos turned an 11-run margin into a 13-12 loss. M. Alvarado blasted a three-run homer in the first to start things off, and the Lobos picked up seven more runs in the second. But the Texans finally got un tracked and pounded three Sul Ross pitchers for five home runs, four doubles and nine singles. The last homer came with one on and one out in the bottom of the seventh to give the Texans their come from behind win. In TIAA action, the Lobos hold a three-game lead over the Texans, and the two teams still have another meeting scheduled. They will square off at Kobernot Field April 16-17 in the series that will probably decide the championship. Before then the Lobos played at Texas Tech on Tuesday and will head for Las Cruces for a four game series with New Mexico State University Friday and Saturday. The Lobos will take on Austin Col lege in conference action April 22- 23 and then close out their regular season play with a four-game series against Lubbock Christian University April 29-30. Sul Ross will host the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ District 8 playoffs at Kokernot Field May 4-7.
