Special to REPUBLICAN: Milan, Apr. 7.—The Prohibition con vention held here Friday was for the purpose of electing a county chairman and a delegate to the district conven tion at Seymour Apr. 5th. Leo Dunn, of Pierceville, was elected county chair man for the next two years, and Loren Pendry, of Milan, was appointed dele gate to Seymour. The Rev. John Hector, although a colored man, is a born orator. He is a Civil War veteran, and handled his sub ject of “The Two Slaveries’’ in a mas terly manner. After paying a heartfelt tribute to Abraham Lincoln he quoted Lincoln's words as follows: ‘A nation divided against itself cannot stand. This nation cannot exist half drunk and half sober. ’ He said that alcoholism unfits men for labor,and it is the labor ing class who produce the wealth of our country. He also spoke in the afternoon on “Sabbath Desecration.” A large and enthusiastic crowd greet ed him Friday night and his discourse was frequently interrupted by hearty applause Although decidedly humor ous his talk was to the point and was instructive and uplifting. The male quartette gave several fine selections. Rev. Hector went to Washington Sunday, where he held services at the Baptist church morning and night. On account of illness Prof. Lough, the putest Chairman, was unable to be pres ent.
