Lynch try to free himself from this deadly, foe. Times without number he firmly resolved to quit, and for a short time succeeded nobly; he was encouraged and upheld by bis true friends and our temperance organizations, but the demon pursued him, and men worse than demons would place the cup to poor Jere.’s lips, and again he would fall, each time lower than before. But with all this, there was ever a manliness, a gentlemanly demeanor, a nobility of character about him which commanded respect, and which gave his friends-hope for his ultimate freedom from the curse which blighted bis life. But-all bis endeavors were in vain; all the efforts of his friends were futile; sickness laid hold upon him, and he passed away.But notwithstanding all that can be said of Jere. Lynch as a victim of strong drink, no one can say that by word or act bo ever harmed any man. He was his own. worst enemy; he has paid the penalty, and now let us cover with the mantle of- forgetfulness this one only dark spot in his life’s history; and let u» remember him as Jere. Lynch the brave and faithful soldier, the kind-hearted, genial, true friend; the honest, honorable, upright man. Let us not condemn him, and such as he, for what he was as seen .in this bis only weakness, but let ua think of him as what we know he tried to be; and when we would censure and condemn let us remember that we know not what any of us might be were we possessed of the same exuberance of spirits, the same warm, gushing, social characteristics, the same strong appetite and too same woak will with which nature endowed him. .
