arising eoriy in tuc morning, wu arc mugmthat tiii* trnth In his mind l«gun to otwfttf, and Rhine like the dawn of morning; tlmt he was urrouicd by the power of its light, lie had had n dream while hiii head Iny upon the stone, and had seen n Indder reaching Iron* earth lt;n heaven, and the angels of God ascending and descending; and the Lord, above the ladder, said unto him, “I mu the Lord God of Abraham, thy father/’ These wonderful things, operating upon hli mind, had aroused him ton new itate ol feeling aud action, lie began tofeel a love for the truth, which was before only in his understanding. His head only had rested upon the stone pillow. Now hla heart began to have faith in the divine truth. His affection « as w ell a^ his understanding could begin to rely upon the Word of God. This was signified by his setting up the stone, and pouring oil upon it. Ily his setting up the stone as a pillar is meant that ho elevated the truth in bU mind, as really divine, as God's Infinite wisdom; and that lie fixed It there as i\firm pillar of support and trust. And hv his anointing it Is meant that he would Ion.* it with all bis heart; that should he the holy object of his affections. And by his saying, “ If Godvvlll he with mo and keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat and raiment to put on, so that I come to my father's house in pence, then shall the Lord he my God. and this stone which I have set up for a pillar shall be God’s house.”—all this means, in Its simple expression, that If God would be with him in Ills regeneration, and give him spiritual food clothing, or goodness to eat and righteousness to put on, and bring him to his heavenly Father's house in pence or to the kingdom of heaven, then the Lord would be hi* find; and the stone pillar, the divine truth In Ids sold, would he God's house: and the truth would tlieu he God's hoft«r; l»ecAti*c God I* love, and love dwells in the tfilth. Human minds, regenerated, are called, In the Word, templet ol the Lord. The church Is culled the ‘’body «»f Christ, and the house «l God. The truth, then, In filling .la-eoh'i regenerated mind, would He the habitn-tinn of luvc.—‘‘God's house.’’MICunion in us mat we can receive spiritual from the Lord.Hut do we dearly understand how the oil and the wine, or goodness and truth, can he separated In us? Goodness ami truth cannot he separated in themselves: they are Inseparable. One cannot exist without theother. W cmight as well have the light of a candle without its heat. Still a man can have one without the other. He can have the truth In his understanding, without I»*i0j( good. The goodness is In the truth; but lie does not feci it. It Is therefore not hit. Those divine principles are therefore separated, so far as that man is concerned. He deals in truths alone; and, in doing this, he hurls the oil and the wine. The truth, to him. is cold. He presents h cold to his neighbor. He destroys its Influence bv presenting it without its goodness, il* life.— Thus he hurts the oil and the wine, lie use* the truth as n dead carcass, which renders both the goodness and the truth U*elcs*. by preventing their proper Influence upon himself and other*, lie does not hurt the goodness and truth n» to tin inselvea; they are divine and indestructible; but he hurt them a# to himself; for he does not let them come together In his heart and life. He treats them »»«» though they were separated: and therefore they are mounted as to him. He is trying to live by faith alone,—by faith without clmritv or works: and therefore all is dead to him, and he l« dead hituself. He hurts the oil and the wine. And even when we are being regenerated; when we have, to some extent, both the goodness and the truth of the Holy Word; when we have some goods and truths which are *eeu and felt to he in union In our minds.—some truths which we love and obey,—still there may he many other truths which we sec, that have not vet given birth in our hearts to the goods which are in them. They are to us only truths alone. They have not yet budded and hlusxutocd in the soil of the nltVctiuns, nnd given forth the fruits of righteousness to our neighbor.
