The oil roust be upon the altnr.The Lord, in Matthew, commands us, when we fast, to anoint our head and wash our face. To fast spiritually is tn he in a cold, dark state, receiving no heavenly food. In that state we are to anoint our head; that is, we are to bring our affections into the truth of the Word, or yield our will to the light of the truth; we are to nnuint our head.«* When thou fastest, anoint thy head and wash thy fare The face denotes all the affections of the soul. To wash denotes regeneration; to cleanse from sin. This cleansing Isent in the things of nature, in his goodness and truth, tu his spirit and life. Everything delightful there springs from the harmonious union and action of his wisdom and lore.Ills love Is in all hearts, and his wisdom is in all light. Therefore everything that delights the eye in all Ihn varieties of beauty, In the blending colors of nature,—all these charms are hut the expressions of God's love und wisdom, actually existing in united action, in the very heart and light which present those beauties to the eye. But, could we look through the natural to the spiritual, far greater beauties would be seen; for If lu tbo coarse substance of nature, God’s wisdom and love can express so much delicacy Of tint and slmdc, w hat must be their charius when seen reflected from the blendings of goodness and truth, In the expanding buds and blossoms of new thoughts and feelings, in the garden of the soul, in the pure light of heaven ?
