A dispatch from Mono County, Cali fomia, gives an account of the murder of a settler and four Italians by a band of Piute Indians. The Mono Lake region is a desolate, sterile section, much resembling the country aroundthe Lead Sea. The waters of the lakeare thoroughly impregnated with borax, salt and magnesia, and the only animal life found in it is a sort of a worm, about! one-fourth of an. inch in length, resemb- jling in appearan ee a shrimp. On the western shore of Mono Lake lived a settler named Louis Samman, a Selavonian by ! birth. He had resided there for over**r^ntv r.o+tfp. or*stunted pasturage around the lake, le;u. , ing a lonely life. Occasionally he v, oul 1kill a Piute and east the body into thealkaline waters of the lake, where itwould soon petrify. This fact waswell known to the whites residing in that section, and the gentleman whogives this information says that he hasseen four of these bodies calmly reposing at the bottom of the lake. Samman’savowed intention was to use the bodies as soon as they became sufficientlyhardened, for hitcliin ghosts and doorsteps. It happened that a body of Piutes strayed near the cabin of Samman, and in the clear waters of the lake near by they saw the bodies of their murdered brethren lying in the water undergoing the process of petrification. They ! became frenzied for revenge, and going 1 to Samman’s cabin took him out (he was alone) and shot him through theheart. They then went several miles toa place where four Italians were, andkilled three of them, one escaping to Bodie and alarming the citizens, telling them a t the same time not to go out there for a few days, as the Indians had sworn to kill any white man that came : out. The county officials have started to capture the Indians. !,
