While on the way to jail Dennis escaped from the officer and was next heard of in Springfield, Monday afternoon, where he entered a blacksmith’s shop, and in the absence of the proprietor, employed one of the workmen to cut the handcufTs from his wrists, while another man watched at the door to prevent observation. The irons were then thrown into the river. The woman was taken to jail, however, and if the odious husband will keep away, the community around Thompsonville recommend a commutation of his sentence.
