GALLUP (Staff) - La Barraca, the fried-chicken-and Mexican-food restaur ant with the funny name, has opened in Gallup at 1303 EF. 66th Ave. According to owner and manager Manuel Alonso, ‘‘la barraca’’ means a little food hut like the ones at fairs. Manuel and Carmen Alonso have lived in Gallup for 14 years. They were part owners of Jerry's Cafe, and Manolo's bar here previously. Mrs. Alonso also teaches physical education at Gallup Jr. High School. The Alonsos met in Spain, during one of Carmen's vacations. They ran the first European Kentucky Fried Chicken place in Madrid for a year after they were mar ried. Then Mrs. Alonso persuaded Manuel to move to the United States, and they ran a restaurant in Flagstaff, Ariz. before moving here. Mr. Alonso says that the one thing he misses about being a restaurateur in Spain is the extremely fresh poultry he used to get there The Alonso's daughter, Pamela, is a sophomore at the University of New Mexico, in Albuquerque R R Dress Shop and Shoe Salon has been purchased by Jerol Eugene Stafford of Gallup and Tom Doser of Sierra Vista, Ariz. Mr. and Mrs. Stafford have lived in Gallup since August, when Mr. Stafford purchased the Dayhoff Shoe Store. Mrs. Stafford became manager of the R R Dress Shop and Shoe Salon in March. The corporation has been under the manage ment of William Wise, who also was co owner “We deeply appreciate the friendships which we have made and wish to thank you for your patronage.
