The Rockdale Tigers track ex pects to pick up a handful of first places and smattering of next-best spots in the District 24-A track and field meet to be run Friday in Cameron. Starting time is 2:30 p. m. at Yue Field, with finals to begin at LOU. ty EK Entered are teams from Rock dale, Cameron, Taylor, George town, Belton and Rosebud. Belton Cameron and Taylor are expected to wage the hottest fights for the district crown. Winners of the first three places in each event Friday will qualify to enter the regioal meet April 20 in San Marcos. Rockdale Coach Wannie Miller said he will enter any boys who qualify for regional in the Giddings relays next weekend to tune them up for regional. Rockdale’s best bet for first place honors in Cameroo is hurd ler Edward Grubbs, a senior who this year had added a strong low hurdles bid to go with his attempt to repeat as district high hurdles king. Grubbs was one of three Rockdale lads winning district events last year, but the other two, Rex McRae and David Yount, have graduated. Grubbs has been unfortunate enough to be entered this year in nearly every meet that Thorndale’s Don Beard has entered. Beard, defending state champion, custom arily beats Grubbs by two or three strides. But without Beard Friday Grubbs should be able to hit the tape first. Grubbs posted his best hurdles times of the year last week at the Killeen relays, where he finished second to Beard twice. Grubbs ran the 120-yard high hurdles in 15 seconds and ran the 180-yard low hurdles in 20.4 seconds. Another probable point-getter for Rockdale is weight man Johnny Timmerman. Here again Timmer man has customarily been second best to Belton’s Bobby Cline, but unlike Grubbs, he must face his nemesis in the district meet. Tim merman is counted on for second place in the shot put and possibly second or third in the discus. More Rockdale points could come in the high jump, where Lee Young, Ringo Robinson and Mar shall Carraway offer a three-man team. Other good point-producing possibilities are Mike Hight in the discus and Grubbs in the bronc jump. Following is a complete list of Rockdale’s entries: 100-yard dash, Henry Ellison, Lee Young and Bill Joiner. 120-yard high hurdles, Edward Grubbs and Bingo Robinson. 440-yard dash, Alex Garza and Travis Walker. 180-yard low hurdles, Edward Grubbs and Bingo Robinson...
