After spending the greater part of the afternoon in quizzing the three men arrested by Chief Murray in con nection with the murder of Joe Car rello, Deputy District Attorney An derson and Sheriff McGlinchey of Ventura were unable to get a satisfac tory confession out of the men. They finally took them to the county jail in Ventura. Together with Chief Murray, the two officials questioned each of the three men separately. Each told a similar story regarding the fight with Carrello in Chinee Alley Sunday night preceding the murder. It was learned, however, that the men had a second fight with the man in the al ley. Previous to yesterday Santiager Rodrigues, his brother N. G. Rodri gues and Mike Romelin had admitted fighting with Carrello in the alley but denied killing him. Yesterday they said he followed them after they end ed their first battle and at the Bight street end of the alley another fight started, in which Carrello was knocked to the ground and severely beaten. They said they left him on the ground in the alley near Eighth street near a pole, the identical spot where he was found fatally wounded and almost dead. They would not say anything about the stabbing, saying they did not know what happened when their backs were turned. Santiago was said to be the man who gave the most battle to the dead man. Chief Murray said one of the men told him that he had Carreiro down on the ground and was beating him. The man who said this stated he did not see a knife used. The knife which was found later belonged to Santiago and the police believe this was used in the fight, but do not know for cer tain.
