It is the first and the greatest of the three annual festivals of the Jews, and was instituted by Moses in commemoration of the delivreanee of the Israelites from Egyptian bondage 3,000 years ago. The feast began at •even, ’ because the Hebrews, like other eastern people, reckon their day from sunst to sunset. It will continue with the orthodox Jews for eight days and with the reformed Jew's for seven days. The feast began with a service at which the father presides. The family gathers around the table, upon which are symbols of the event. A roasted bone represents the paschal lamb, a loaf of unleavened bread represents the haste with which the Israelites departed from Egypt, and a bundle of bitter herbs reminds them of the bitter experiences of their forefathers. The father recites passages from the Talmud, relates the story of the liberation of the Jews, and psalms are sung. There were services at the Hebrew7 congregation Temple Beth El commencing observance of the feast.in the orthodox synagogues services are held lhlt; first and second and seventh and eighth days of the feast, but the reformed Jews celebrate only the first and last days. The intervening days are half holidays. During the pas-over every orthodox Jew arrays himself in entirely new garments and abstains from unnecessary toil. Unleavened bread is eaten throughout the term of feastAs the death and resurrection of Christ coincide with the celebration of the passover, many of the symbols, commemorations and ceremonies of the festival passed into the Christian j Easter feast.
