Death of an Old Settler, Mr. John Roe died at his residence, two miles southeast of Vinland, March 26, 1883, aged 83. Mr. Roe was born in Yorkshire, England, October 20, 1799, moved to Canada in 1831, and emigrated to Kansas in May, 1855. Mr. Roe was the father of six children. ‘Three boys and one girl are still living. In many respects Mr. Roe was a remarkable man, so it was familiarly said of him that his word was as ag any man’s bond. Coming to Kansas in her darkest hours, when the struggle between freedom and slavery had been transferred from the halls of con to the plains of Kansas, he gave the cause of freedom an unwavering sup port, contributing largely by counsel, ex ample and by his means towards making Kansas a free state. Living near one of the stations of the underground railroad, no 2 fugitive from slavery, when free ing from oppression, has been helped for ward to freedom by him and his ch ants. He was an honored and reseqted member of Vinland, under whose enters he was buried in Vinland cemetery, March 38, 1883.
