ONE-MAN STAFF The annual Blue and Gold foot ball game between picked squads of Corsicana Tiger prospects will be staged Wednesday afternoon at Ti ger field, closing their spring train ing. It will be the first time the Ti gers will show before the public under any coach other than John ny Pierce in many years. Pete Allen took over in the middle of the training season when Pierce went into the navy. Now Allen is not only head coach but the only coach, Otis Pederson, junior high coach, has been help ing him, but he also leaves Mon day for the Navy. That makes the fourth Tiger coach to leave, and only Allen remains among the en tire staff of Corsicana mentors that started the school year. By HAROLD V. RATLIFF Associated Press Sports Editor The University of Texas lost every member of that great sprint relay team of 1941—Billy Seay, Carlton Terry, Fred Ramsdell and Lonnie Hill—but resourceful Clyde Littlefield plucked some footballers to build a combination that bids fair to equal the illustrious efforts of its predecessor. Mal Kutner, Max Minor and Jackie Field are the gridsters who helped Jean Wiren win the special event at the South western Exhibition in 43.4 against a strong wind. Pete Jones of Bryan becomes the dean of Central Texas Class AA high school coaches with Paul Tyson out at Waco and Johnnie Pierce of Corsicana in the naval reserves. Tyson had been at Waco more than a quar ter of a century, Pierce at Corsi cana 17 years. Temple again looks like the team to beat in this district with ten lettermen back but Tyson leaves some fine ma terial at Waco for hard-working Harry Stiteler. And it’s an even exchange for the fellow who suc ceeds Stiteler at Corpus Christi. Buccaneer prospects also are very bright. Long distance rivalry: Joe Wood and Jerry Thompson, a couple of half-pints, were strong rivals in high school track. Each beat the other once in the mile; each became state mile champion. At the South western Exposition meet, Jerry broke Wood's record set in 1941 in the preparatory division, running the distance in 4:31.6. Jerry is a freshman at Texas. But Wood wasn’t to be outdone. He won the mile in the college division with 4:31.4. Wood is a sophomore at North Texas State. The armed services are taking a toll among Texas sports writers. Charles Burton of the Dallas News, Howard Brickey of the Wichita Falls Times, Oscar Larnce of the Waco News-Tribune, Dub King of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram— they’re some of the sport scribblers who have joined up. And now Amos Melton of the Star-Telegram says he’s going into the army. Amos is in shape for all that marching, too. He hasn't been tramping the states golf fairways all these years for nothing. Bill Woodside, sports editor of the Paris News, offers this as a Solution for the conflict between spring football training and the regular spring sports. Why not have district track and field meets May 1 instead of the mid dle of April? Then there would be plenty of time for 30 days between basketball and track training. Also, Woodside sent out a clar ion call to all exes of Paris Junior College. The Quarterbacks Club is sponsoring a spring football game April 8, matching the PJC team with the ex-Dragons. Jack Wilson of Baylor and several others ac cepted invitations but present ad dresses of many exes were un known. Bob Berry of East Texas State, former PJC coach, tutored the exes. A report on an Arkansas foot ball game next fall is likely to read like this: “Jones lateraled to Jones who passed to Jones for a touchdown.” There already are two of the Jones boys on the squad—Mederith and David Paul, passing and punting stars. Now comes Ben Jones, pass-catching wizard. Lieut. J. T. Tolar, assistant phy sical director at the Corpus Christi Naval Air Station, thinks the open track and field meets throughout the country should allow boys from the armed services to repre sent their alma maters, participat-
