He was a fine young man and had many friends.Los Angeles, March 31—Patrolman James Costello, 29, whose father was a Montana sheriff killed by cattle rustlers, was shot to death here Monday when he attempted to question a well dressed man sitting in a parked automobile.The slayer escaped. Costello and Patrolman ELmer Hoffman of the uniformed motor patrol saw a green roadster at a curbing and halted. Costello approached the car and a moment later Hoffman saw him returning, arms in the air, with the gunman behind him.He’s got the drop on me,” Costello warned, then ducked. Hoffman’s gun blazed and the bandit, ducking, fired too.Costello, shot in the back, dropped to the street. Hoffman's shots went wild as the bandit got into his car and fled.Costello was to have been married soon to Edna Cook, radio entertainer. He came from a peace-officer family.
