Secures Information on Three Suspects in Carrello Murder Mystery MEN IN CITY JAIL Admit Fighting With Carello Sunday Night But Deny Killing Him Starting without a single clue Chief Murray of the Oxnard _ polices force ran down and arrested three men whom he suspects as being close ly connected with the murder of Joe Carrello, who was stabbed to death in Chinee Alley late Sunday night. The three men in the city jail are Santiago Rodriguez, Mike Lomelin and N. G. Rodriguez, brother of Santiago. Chief Murray was unable to learn any details of the stabbing — affair Sunday night. All he knew was that Joe Carrello, was murdered, stabbed through the heart, with several other knife cuts about the face. No one in or about Chinee Alley knew any thing about the affair. Yesterday morning the chief got his first crew, in the form of descrip tions of three men who were said to have been arguing with someone in Chinee alley Sunday night. The de scriptions were as follows: No. 1, Mexican, six feet, 30 years old, smooth shaven, dark clothes, wore a large black hat. Mexican No. 2, 24 years old, 140 pounds, five feet eight inches tall, smooth shaven, wore over alls and jumper. Mexican No. 3, five feet two inches,20 pounds, smooth shaven, overalls and jumper, wore cap. The chief traced the source of in formation and got two witnesses, one from town and another from the Pat terson ranch, who was said to have been robbed by one of the men. He learned that one of the men might be at the Limonella ranch at Santi aula. He notified Deputy District Attorney Henderson and Sheriff Mc Glinchey, who accompanied him to Santa Paula, but a search of that territory threw no light on the mys tery. Every officer, however, was told to be on the lookout. Last night, Chief Murray found an other crew, and learned from a Mexi can where one of the men was stay ing. He summoned Officer Phillips and entered a Fifth street rooming house. Here he found two of the men he was looking for. Phillips stood in the doorway, while the Chief “frisked” the men in a search for con cealed weapons. They were then handcuffed and taken to the city jail. Another trip was made and a few minutes later the third man was found in another rooming house on Fifth street. He too was taken to the jail, Santiago admitted having quar relled with Carrello, but said the lat ter started it by insulting him. He said the fracas started at the far end of Chinee alley, when Carrello com menced calling him names. A fight followed and Carrello grabbed San tiago by the throat, tearing off his necktie. The tie was found under a dresser in the Fifth street rooming house. He said that while they were fighting, Mike Lomelin came to his assistance. He was followed by N. G. Rodriguez, who says he saw Car rello waving a knife, or revolver, something that was shining. Santia go said that when the men saw this they left Carrello and that was the last they saw of him. Chief Murray doubts the man's story and will not release them until a thorough investigation has been launched. He says he is positive the men know more about the murder, for he found a large jack-knife in the pocket of one of the men’s coats. It had a vicious, long, blood-stained blade. It looked capable of doing similar work to that which ended Car rello’s life. On the shoves of one of the men, which were found in a suit case in the rooming house were found what were thought to be blood stains. One of the men carried over $150 in this, most of them few and crisp, and a gold watch which belonged to someone else. Many books on draft ing were found in Santiago's suitcase, together with drafting instruments, showing he followed that line of ocu pation. An address in a letter in the suitcase gave his home as 1520 K street, East Wilmington. His brother also was from the same place. Both men said they had been here 10 days. Lomelin said he had been here only a week. Chief Murray arranged to have the district attorney make an investiga tion and arrange a hearing before Judge Elliott sore time in the near
