Names in the news KATONAH, N.Y. (AP) Christopher Reeve’s con gresswoman calls him ‘an in spiration to all Americans’’ and has nominated him for the 1996 National Medal of Arts. In a letter to the National En dowment for the Arts, U.S. Rep. Sue Kelly, R-N.Y., says Reeve “epitomizes one who has signifi cantly contributed to both the ar tistic and spiritual heritage of this country.” While Reeve is best known for portraying Superman, he has also excelled on stage and in other films, is committed to re gional theaters and is active in social causes, Kelly said. Reeve, 43, was paralyzed from the neck down in May after damaging his spinal cord in a horse-riding accident. _ His courage, Kelly said, is ‘‘an inspiration to all Americans.” A dozen awards are handed out each year. President Clinton will present them later this year. Services set for Clearfield teen William C. ‘‘Billy’’ Mc Cracken, 16, of 213 W. Pine St., Clearfield, died Monday, April 1, 1996. Born Dec. 24, 1979, in Clear field, he was the son of William C. and Donna (Pasquariello) Mc Cracken. He was a sophomore at the Clearfield Area High School were he was a member of the Clear field High School marching band, concert band, chorus and ski club. Mr. McCracken was employed at the Susquehanna Veterinary Clinic, Clearfield. He belonged to the West Side United Methodist Church Boy Scout Troop 1 and Saint Francis Catholic Church where he at tended Sunday School. In addition to his parents, he is survived by a brother, Shawn Ryan McCracken, at home; maternal grandparents, Frank and Rose Pasquariello of Clear field; paternal grandmother, Vi ola McCracken of Clearfield; three aunts, one uncle and sever al cousins. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Oliver McCracken. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Saint Francis Catholic Church with the Fr. Dennis C. Hadberg officiating. Frances Simcox Cassick, 83, of North Haledon, N.J., and formerly of Philipsburg, died Sunday, March 31, 1996, at the Lincoln Park Intermediate Care Center, Lincoln Park, N.J. Born March 14, 1913, in Philipsburg, she was a daughter of the late James and Mary (Ginnicks) Simcox. Mrs. Cassick was retired as a self-employed domestic. She is survived by a son, Donald Simcox of North Haledon; seven grandchildren, 13 great- grandchildren and nine great-great- grandchildren; a sister, Sara Goss of Clearfield; and two brothers, Jobe Simcox of Philipsburg and Enoch Simcox of Clearfield. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Frederick W. Cassick, whom she married Sept. 8, 1964, and who died on Oct. 26, 1988. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the David K. Dahlgren Funeral Home with the Rev. James Harper of the Grace United Methodist Church, Philipsburg officiating. Interment will be in the Beaver Cemetery, Black Moshannon. Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Edwin T. Shingledecker PHILIPSBURG — Edwin T. Shingledecker, 66, of 703 Scott St., Philipsburg, died at 8:55 a.m. Tuesday, April 2, 1996, at his residence. Born June 27, 1929, in Cleve land, Ohio, he was the son of the late Orval T. and Laura E. (Savage) Shingledecker. He was a 1947 graduate of the Philipsburg High School. Mr. Shingledecker was the owner/operator of E.T. Shingledecker Co., Philipsburg and was employed until his re tirement with Merryman Trucking, Philipsburg. He was formerly superin tendent for Putman Green, Philipsburg. He was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Philipsburg, a member of Mo shannon Lodge No. 391 FAM, Philipsburg, a member of the Williamsport Consistory, a member of the Jaffa Temple, Altoona. He also attended the Abundant Life Fellowship Church, Philipsburg. He was also a life member of the B.P.O. Elks No. 1123, Philipsburg, a social member of the AMVETS and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, both of Philipsburg. He is survived by his second wife, the former Sally Carbaugh Creek, whom he married June 17, 1986; two daughters, Linda A. Bjorkquist of Bryn Mawr and Laura ‘Kay’ Verbeck of Philipsburg; a son, Gary T. Shingledecker of Philipsburg; two step-daughters, Vicki Gar brick of Mill Hall and Cindy Slother of Philipsburg; three step-sons, Robert D. Creek of Grassflat, Joe Creek of Balti more, Md., and Chris Creek of Philipsburg. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, four step grandchildren and a sister, Donna Thompson of King of Prussia. He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, the former Betty Baumgardner, whom he married in Philipsburg and who died April 18, 1985. Stevens, 90, formerly of Mineral Springs and most recently a guest of the Cur wensville Nursing Home, died Tuesday, April 2, 1996, at Clear field Hospital. Born Sept. 11, 1905, in Spring Valley, she was a daughter of the late Seth and Sarah (Litz) Maines, Mrs. Stevens was a home maker and a member of the Glad Tidings Assembly of God, Clearfield. She is survived by five daugh ters, Mrs. Clifford (Cora) Lingle of Woodland RD, Mrs. Wilson (Ruby) Schoening and Mrs. James (Bonnie) Knepp, both of Mineral Springs, Mrs. Richard (Evelyn) Cowder of Shiloh and Mrs. Robert (Barbara) Carella of Clearfield; 13 grandchildren, several great- grandchildren and great- great grandchildren, and a sister, Mabel Maines of Hyde. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Stevens was preceded in death by her husband, Harold L. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, George Joseph Yontosh, who died May 5, 1962. George Maruschak, Jr. WEST FARMINGTON, Ohio - George Maruschak, Jr., 65, of West Farmington, Ohio, died Monday, March 25, 1996, in Nor thside Medical Center in Youngstown, Ohio. Born Dec. 1, 1930, in Philips burg, he was the son of George P. and Jean (Wilson) Maruschak, Sr He served in the U.S. Army. He had lived in West Farmington for 45 years. Mr. Maruschak retired in 1993 as a supervisor for the Ohio Department of Transportation where he had worked for 22 years. He was a member of the Cor tland Moose Lodge Post 1012 and ARSCME Retiree Program. He is survived by his father of Philipsburg; his wife, LaVonne (Orebaugh) Maruschak; a son, George III of Puyallup, Wash.; and three grandchildren. Also surviving are four sisters, Pauline Knauff of Arkansas, Peggy Johns of West Farm ington, Rebecca Maruschak of Philipsburg and Janette Martin of Harrisburg; and five brothers, Raymond and Tony, both of Philipsburg, William of Linglestown, Gene of Harrisburg and Jim of California. He was preceded in death by his mother, two sons, Paul and Andrew; a brother, Lester; and two uncles. Services were held at the Saint Edward Catholic Church, Parkman, Ohio. Newling GINTER — Funeral services for Malcolm Thomas Newling, 71, a resident of Ginter, who died Saturday, March 30, 1996 in the H.
