Environmental Protection Commissioner David Bardin said his department believes 41 per cent of the forest fires in the state last year were set intentionally. Bardin and Gov. Brendan T. Byrne flew over the At ston Lake fire in National Guard helicopters Friday. Dense smoke from the fires in pine needles on the forest floor rose more than 2,000 feet and could be seen more than 20 miles away. Bardin said the state's for est fire season is just begin ning and Byrne praised the work of about 1,500 volunteers who fought 42 fires Thursday and Friday. The governor also asked citizens to be careful about the use of flame near the woodlands, but he said there are no immediate plans to close state lands Bardin called the Pine Bar rens pitch pine and scrub oak woodlands “the second worst fire risk in the country,” only ranking behind Southern Cali fornia. ‘ He said last summer was dry, followed by a deep freeze in the winter, so that the sandy soil in the Pinelands held little moisture. Harrison added that in spring before the trees “green out the sun warms and dries old pine needles on the ground. “That stuff is just like gaso line,” he said.
