Aut of black studies programs in predominantly white academic institutions will be discussed by some 50 Texas educators thursday and Friday, April 16 17, at UH. ‘Black Studies in Higher Education’ is the topic of the intercollegiate conference, which will focus on the basis for a black studies program, its role in the university structure, its curriculum and its goals. Speakers include Sen. Mervyn M. Dymally, Urban Affairs Institute, Los Angeles and member of the California Legislature; Dr. Nathan Wright, Afro-American studies department chairman, State University of New York at Albany; Dr. Thomas F. Pettigrew, social relations department, Harvard University, and Dr. William J. Wilson, associate professor of sociology, University of Massachusetts. Speakers will present their viewpoints Thursday at a 2 p.m. session in AH Aud. 1. General discussion will follow. Administrators and faculty members will meet in conference with speakers at 9 a.m. Friday in Room 3A of OB Hall. In Room 3B at the same time students will hold a session to prepare for an 1 am. student and speaker meeting in the same room. Plenary session and conference summation will follow lunch at 12:30 p.m. in OB Ballroom. Oscar Cohen, national program director for the B'nai Brith Anti-Defamation League, New York City, will speak The conference is sponsored by UH and the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith. Heading local arrangements is Dr. Robert V. Haynes, acting director, UH Afro-American Studies Program.
