Reports if the Usui KMThe result became known on Thurs, day, nth February, when it was announced that Father Wiadimir Led-ochoweki had been chosen (or the position of General. As usual on such occasions, reports in the daily papers alleged that there had been a druggie between the representatives of different nationalities, being particularly keen between, the Germans and the French ! It was said that Father Fine, a Frenchman, was the first favourite, that he was opposed by the Germans and the German sympathisers, that the English stood for the French candidate, and the ItHltans were almost equally divided, and that the decision ■ rested withthe Spanish, who. not seeing any pro* ability of the Generalship rs-turning to them, preferred to seek a compromise, and suggested the election of Father Ledochowski, who, being a Pole, belongs to neither side. Notwithstanding these reports, it max be taken for granted that the chief consideration In the minds of the electors was who was best fitted to discburge the duties of the Post. Born in 187®. Father Led-* ochoweki did not enter the Order until he was twenty-three, but almost immediately after his ordina-tloto to the priesthood'he^was appointed Provincial of the Jesuit Province of Galicia. In 1906, at the Congregation which resulted in the election of Father Wems to the Generalate, Father Lsdochowaki, though only forty years of age, received many votes, and he was afterwards elected Assistant of Germany —that is, be was made the official representative at Rome of the group of province* consisting of Germany, Belgium, Qalieia and Holland. Although in this way connected with Germany, Father /Ledochowski, as the grand-nephew of the late Cardinal Ledochowski, wfa sc courageous champiorship of the Polish language and interests when ArcfaMabop of Posen was punished with two years' imprisonment by the Prussian authorities, can hardly be suspected of very pronounced German sympathies.
