LeVaughn Flynn Staff Reporter WORLD TAKE notice. TWELVE-YEAR-OLD MARIO Orion Downer of Walmer’s Boys has the confi dence and talent to command any tennis court he steps on to. Like his middle name, Downer is a shimmering young star that shines each time he holds a racquet in hand. Downer represented his school in the Cable Wireless Secondary Schools Tennis Competition in the Under-16 category, skipping the Under-14 group because he wanted “a greater challenge” After helping Wolmer’s to win the Under-14 title last year, Downer decided to challenge himself and join the Under-16 team where he believed he could help them to win another title for the school. He came up just short, however, as he and his brother, Marlon Downer, bowed out to Campion College in the doubles final. CONFIDENCE Downer is special not only because he is immensely talent ed but because of the confi dence he displays on the court and in conversation. He is unshaken by competing against players older and bigger than he is. A year ago, Downer played an exhibition game with managing director of National Commercial Bank, Rubyn Hill, where he had Hill chasing the ball all over the court in order to keep up. Along with tennis, Downer plays cricket and table tennis and performs well in school. He may be only a few inches taller than the full-sized racquet he uses but Mario Orion Downer is ready to take on any life-sized challenge on his way to perfecting his game.
