Mineral Point’s ’vampire’ gives police Dracula-sized headacheBy VIRGINIA MAYOCapital Times Staff WriterA vampire, or something (or someone) darned close, is roaming around Mineral Point, scaring area residents and giving city police one large headache.'{'he matter is further complicated by the fact that a number of area residents who think the vampire story is pretty funny have started dressing up as Dracula and have started appearing at city bars and other places, jumping out and frightening people.According to Lt. Bill Trott, the original vampire made his first appearance Monday. While on a routine patrol of the cemetery, Officer Jon Pepper saw the Dracula-like figure lurking behind tombstones.“If it was an April Fool’s-joke, it started well before April 1, and it’s caught on with other people, Trott said.“Pepper walked up to the guy and asked what he was doing. The caped figure, standing about 6 feet 5 inches tall, said nothing and started running. Trott said Pepper chased the would-be vampire for a while but lost him as he jumped over a 4-foot tall barbed wire fence and headed toward a pasture housing several Angus bulls.Trott said he is concerned that the original Mineral Point vampire may be someone who is mentally ill.“I’ve tried to ignore all of them because all they want is a little attention, Trott said. “I’ve got enough other things going that I don't need to go around chasing vampires. But if it is somebody with a problem, I’d like to catch him before he plays out his fantasy.” .Although the past few weeks have been busy for Trott and the other Mineral Point police officers, he apparently is taking the vampire fad in his stride.“We will probably have vampires around her for the next two weeks now that they think they can get away with it and scare a few people,’’ Trott said.Extra officers will be stationed at the cemetery at night to see if they can catch the would-be Dracula, he said.
