Go/f course reviewEastlake Country Club, San DiegoEastlake Country Club is a new championship golf course in San Diego. So, what’s news about that, you say? There are over 80 courses in San Diego County already, with new ones opening all the time.Eastlake is different. They did it right. The built it carefully — in the middle of a huge, upscale residential and commercial development and thev built it tolast.While it is a country club, it is open for public play as well. Designed by renowned golf course architect Ted Robinson, the course offers an exciting challenge to players of all levels.The par 72, 6,606-yard course has 1,800 trees, six lakes (three with waterfalls) 72 traps and five miles of continuous cart paths for year-round play.With four different tee settings, you can make this course as challenging as you want.The course is extremely well-cared for. Greens are bentgrass and slick. Fairways are bluegrass and ryemixture. This course stays green even though it’s in a part of San Diego—the east end of Chula Vista — that’s well east of the wetter coastline.When there, we played the gold tees, the equivalent of the blue tees at other courses and this proved to be a remarkably difficult course on which to score.The front side is long and straightforward and looks a lot easier than it is — from the carpath. The back side is shorter, but wind often comes into play, adding distance on some holes.There are a number of pretty holes on this course and if you can’t score, atleast you can enjoy the architecture.We played Eastlake the day after we played the mountainous terrain of Mt. Woodson and frankly, Eastlake was the perfect antidote. It wasn’t easy, but it was at least straightforward. You could actually see the green from most tees. Fairways were wide If you occasionally found the rough, you were likely to Find your ball.The course was in excellent shape when we played and gives no indication that that will change.
