Coach Gene Denk, starting his third year at the Foreman high school baseball helm, is highly optimistic over the chances of this year’s team. With a break here and there they could well capture the Northwest section crown, he says. Last year the Hornets finished with a 7-7 league record and did not gain the playoffs. However, they won four out of their last five games and dropped three of their seven league games by a single run. Tom Burke, a senior lef thander and one of six returning lettermen, appears to be the best pitcher. He is fast and has good control. Another senior letterwinner, Jim Lowizrel, is also in for some first line pitching. A right hander, he is also the team's first string shortstop. When he’s on the mound his shortstop post will be filled by junior Dave Smalley. At second base Coach Denk will have Dave Armstrong, who led all Foreman batters in 1969 with a .360 average. He is also a lettermen as is left fielder Ted Siara, a junior right fielder Craig Saunders, a sophomore, and senior utility player Jim Lundell. The first base post will be filled by Tom Poulos, a transfer from Austin high school, who was also a member of this year’s Hornets basketball team. Pete Drenth, a senior, seems to have the inside track on the third base position. A junior, Mickey Mazur, is the No. 1 catcher. The centerfield post is a toss-up at the moment bet ween senior Jim Grande of Hornets basketball fame and junior Tony Bialas. Phil Waiters, a junior, is the second string first baseman. The Hornets had warm-up games scheduled this week against St. Philip, Taft and Austin and games Monday and Tuesday of next week against Wells and Marshall. Just how many they would get in was problematical because of the cold weather and wet grounds.
