If the lights are DULL ©r DEAD, $ee A. If, however, the lights are WRIGHT, then watcli them closely while you step on the Starter Switch for a second or so then—If lights go VERY DIM when you step on the Starter Switch, see B.If lights DIM ONLY SLIGHTLY, and Starter HUMS OVER, yetit doe* not turn the engine, see CIf lights DO NOT CHANGE and Starter DOES NOT OPERATE AT ALL, or only a half •turn or so, see D,I uft:»;i| t I t.Examiae the Battery connections to see that thry are TIGHT and not ObKKODED badly, and be sure to see that the GROUNDED terminal (see illustration) on the BatteryIf the Battery terminals are corrodcd badly, take them off and clean thoroughly with a little ammonia, then smear with vaseline and tighten down firmly. If the connections are all right, have the Battery recharged at the first opportunity/ If the lights show any life at all, try and start the engine with the hand crank, as there will probably be enough life'left in the Battery to ©perate the Ignition. If Jhe Battery has been running down very rapidly, examine all wife# careful!, J.o see if the insulated covering or insulation has ruined through at any point, so allowihg the bare wire to touch a metal part If the wiring has rubbed through, buy a small roll of Insulating Tape at anv accessory or electric goods store, and carefully tape up the part of the wire that has rubbed through. If you cannot find anything wrong witn the wiring, then have a good Ignition man test it out, and also test the Generator to sea that it is charging the Battery, and the Cut Out on the Generator to see that it operates properly. Sometimes it sticks with thepoints dosed, and runs down the Battery.!KI8Tvrlt;]IriSee that the engine is out of gear. If it is, then examine the StartingMotor Pinion to 9*e that it is not stuck in the edge of the flywheel. First, turn off the Ignition Switch (if you have not already done so) then put the .engine into high gear and rock car backwards and forwards.ti auu a vv«v vat uavi%ff ^when the pinion will generally release itself. If yotj have to do this, have a good mechanic or the Service Station line up the shaft for vou before you use the Starter again. If it\1, Examine the Coir Spring on the Starting Motorshaft to see that it is not broken or disconnected. If the spring looks all right, then clean the threaded sleeve tfiat the Pinion runs on. with some gasoline-then try Starter to see if it will eftgage. DO NOTat any time LUBRICATE this outer thread, it must be DRY. If Starter will still not operate engine, then remove the bolt on the end of the shaft, when thethreaded sleeve with the spring and pinion attached can be pullpd off. Clean inside the sleeve thoroughly with some gasoline or kerosene, then lubricate INSIDE the sleeve with a little GRAPHITE grease and replace on the shaftCLUTCH DBIVE2. On the outside of the case, you will find a place to oil the clutch with t thin, high grade oil. Squirt a little oil through this hole, then try Starter again. If it STILL will not operate engine properly, the clutch rollers have worn and must be replaced by a competent mechanic! I 1 ! i 1'\~»«s1. Examine the connections at the Startin* Motor, Starting Switch, andBattery to see that they are all clean and tight. If they seem all right then—«2. Remove the cover from end of Starting Motor and examien the brushes to see that they are bearing on the commutator with a moderate amount of pressure and are not binding. BE SURE VOU DO NOT CHANGE THE POSITION OF THE BRUSHES while doing this.If they appear to be all right then—3. Blow out any dust that may have accumulated, then examine the Commutator surface. If it appears dirty or blackened, then clean the surface with a piece of rag moistened with Gasoline and finish with a piece of very flu* No. 00 SAND PAPER, not emery clofft. Now replace cover and try Starter. If it STILL will not operate, then start the engine with the hand crank and have the Starting Motor examined by an expert electrical mechanic, as the fault is an internal one requiring his skill to remedy,WAIT WEEK—1 ‘GASOLINE SYSTEM TROUBLES”Copyrighted 1922 by The S-N-L Technical Syndicate---\!\ea1cVttTItnFrIaabi
