BUTTE OFFICER ASSASSINATEDMysterious Shooting: of Youngest Member of Police Force.BUTTE. -March 30.— Ivan \V. Lincoln, one of the youngest members of the Butte police force, met his death at the hands of an assassin while on .duty at an early hour this morning in the west side residence district of the city. His lifeless body was found in the office of the West Side Wood and Coal company this morning. When found, the body was cold and rigid, showing that death hud taken place ; a number of hours before. Bullet i murks—one above and the other below* | the lips, showed how the officer met 'his death. Two empty shells, found near the corpse, showed that the weapon used by the slayer was an automatic revolver of German make.Patrolman Lincoln was the officer, who, about two months ago. stood on a I busy downtown street corner at the time of the fatal shooting of Mine i Guard Thomas Munro by Harry Rob-| Inson, vice president of the Mine I Workers* union. He also was the policeman summarily removed from the | force by Provost Marshal Frank Con-i ley, during the time Butte was under• martial law. Lincoln had made re-; marks reflecting upon Governor S. , V. Stewart s action in ordering thetroops to Butte.At the police headquarters it was stated tonight that the detectives were working on the theory that Lincoln had been killed as a result of a collision with a jealous husband, whom the officers are seeking, or by coal yard thieves. Lincoln apparently had I been shot outside the coal office, the , door forced opened and the body dragged inside.The police tonight arrested Mrs. Bessie Fadden, wife of Albert Fadden. j with whom Patrolman Lincoln was I said to be very friendly. She is detained at police headquarters as n witness. The officers also are holding George Shilz. a ruilroad watch-1 man, whom the police believe was a I great admirer of Mrs. Fadden. Shilz• is being held merely on suspicion and no charge has been placed against him thus far.The husband of the woman. Albert Fadden. cuts no figure in the case, uc-i cording to the belief of the detectives. ! Officers are of the opinion that Pa-i trolman Lincoln was asleep when he i was shot, the gun being held so close - to the patrolman's face and mouth that powder marks were left.The mother-in-law of the Fadden 1 womun stated tonight that Mrs. Fadden was getting a divorce and it was understood she was to marry Officer 1 Lincoln as soon as she was free to wed again.
