ledge of the Melon, Banana, Jacob’s Sweets, Delicious, or the other succulent specimens. The question may beasked: “Why do not the nurserymen urge the sale of trees bearing these rare varieties of apples?’’ The answer is this, that it hardly pays the nurserymen to bother about propagating rare varieties for there is not sufficient demand for these trees to make the effort profitable. Then, again, the planters of trees desire varieties that will give the greatest yield, and argue that as long as the public will buy without questioning the quality we want the apple that will produce, although some of the best varieties will yield as well as some of the inferior kinds.QUALITY GOVERNS PRICE.The point is this, that no one should accept an apple until he knows what he is buyng and he should not expect to buy a superior quality of apple with tender flesh and juicy. There is a great demand for good apples, the dealer and the grower will reap the benefit of their efforts if they will take time and give patience to work out a system of placing before the public varieties of apples that will give satisfaction. The market for good apples this season has grown and the demand has been extremely larger than in previous years. Word comes from the old settled districts in the East that the crop is light, and the Hood river and Wenatchee growers are not shipping their fruit indiscrimately to commission houses, as they have done in the past, but are getting the best results from combined effort. The fruit associations that are'being organized throughout the Northwest are getting results in the way of better fruit and a system of packing and if the right methods are used and carried out the apple industry will be governed by the producers here in the Northwest.C. C. BROWN, Asst. Dist. Hort. Insp.Adds Another String to His Bow.R. E. Olds, the famous designer of automobiles, has added several new inventions to his credit, the latest being a power driven lawn mower. It has always been the ambition of this inventor to produce labor saving devices which would be within the reach of the “not quite so wealthy.” That Mr. Olds’ efforts have ni6t with success is proven by the popularity of his automobile. He will undoubtedly And a big market for his low priced power driven lawn mower.R. E. Olds works on the theory that labor saving machinery lengthens life; and why not? Can you picture a short life and a hard one for the modern farmer with his power driven milking machine, water pumps, electric lighting system, wood cutting machinery, grinding machine, silo filler, churn, washing machine, automobile, motor truck, and tractor?Mr Olds said in an interview to this paper, “The farm is the logical stamping ground for labor saving devices. With the young people of the farm getting false ideas of the advantages of the city and the consequent scarcity of good assistance on the farm, Mother Necessity has forced Invention to turn her wits and ingenuity to devices of steel and iron, with everything but the brains of a human being, to till the gap.It is quite true that some of the machinery now used on the farm and operated by gasoline power is rather expensive., but given time, these machines will be complemented by machines of lower price which will be within the reach of the farmer who finds the first cost of the high priced machine prohibitive. I have in mind one machine in particular which takes the place of several teams of horses, it is really a wonderful invention for the large farm, but is too large and too expensive for the smaller farm. And I have ideas now on a smaller and lower priced machine to do the same work on a smaller farm and take the place of several teams —yet to sell at the price of a good team of horses. The successful, practical inventor must keep before him always the fundamentals of low price, light weight, and power with stability. I have done this with my automobile and succeeded. I am doing the same with my lawn mower, and will follow these principals throughout all my inventions.•■BEE SUPPLIES standard—the best to had for money-making purposes.
