44Ar«Snake” Seems to Have AboutPetered Out and Dwindled Into a Mere Man Hunt inThe Tiger Mountains and Reports Were GreatlyExagerated.THE INDIAN LEADER STILL LI LARGE.There seems to have been much more bluster about the Crazy Snake uprising than war and there appears now to be little more than a man hunt in the Tiger mountains.The following from J. A. Phelan,of theTimes-Detaocrat, who is on the ground, covers the entire ease so far as can be learned:urday night by the battle at the home of Crazy Snake when Deputies Odom and Baum were killed. Then the “Smoked meat rebellion’* assumed the proportions of an alleged Indian outbreak, with the state troops, the sheriff’s posses and others all joining in the hunt for the old Snake leader.HICKORY GROUND, VIA TEL. Fowler.What Caused Trouble.The incident which lead up to all the trouble was when Deputy Sher-* iff Patty of McIntosh county, armed with a’Search warrant, went to Hickory ground in an endeavor to recover some stolen smoked meat on Wednesday last. There was nothing at Hjckory but a little store run by a negro named Edwards and a group of 'tdntd'inhabited by “no account*’ negroes. Patty, after searching the store and two tents was scared off yihen ah aygry'negro pointed the business end or a Winchester at him.Patty,, retreated \o feller’s store, a half 'mil© distant, and phonedSheriff Pdom for reinforcements,whick were sent. A negro boy on the way to, ttye store, was intercepted and held and jater seyeral other negroes were' halted,, Nine negroes from Hidkory hearing there was trouble cam*- marching up in a body and went ftb. for 148 *he house of a man nam^d jRdss, who came to his front door: After a few ot words the negroesCommenced Firing on Ross and he took to the brush. After the fueilade the negroes returned to Hickory camp. Many shots were heard in the thickets and after three or four men Jiad been wounded, Edwards, hearing a flag of truce,, was captured along with about 40 other negroes. The prisoners were takenfrohr Henryetta Via Muskogee to Eu-faula.Saturday’* Battle.This* trouble was followed on SatMuskogee Boys Well,Col. Hoffman and Lieut. Col. West, Special District Indian Agents Fred Cook and J. Carter Cook of Muskogee, Johnson Tiger, interpreter, Robinson Starr, a full blood member of the Snake band, captured Monday, and 80 militiamen, including Co. F of Muskogee, under command of Cftpt. W. A. Green, are now in the Tfoer mountains, two miles and a half out of Pierce. Col. Hoffmanreceived ho word *aat Crazy Shake is Witling to surrender and at 6 o’clock this morning Hoffman phoned Bhhker John Suiting Of Heb ryetta to secure 50 saddle horses to be used by the troops, as it was found impossible to make any intelligent pursuit of the Snake band through the mountain fastnesses on foot.Twenty members of the signal corps, in charge of Capt. Robertson of Blackwell, completed a telephone line at noon today from Hickory ground to Henryetta.Among the soldiers in the field are companies B of Chandler, C of Shawnee, F of Muskogee, H of Durant, M of Oklahoma City, the engineer corps of Lawton, the signal corps of Blackwell and the hospital corps of Oklahoma City.Monday morning a small detail under the command of Captain Hunter left Hickory ground and has not since been heard from by Col. Hoffman, although it is known the men are safe in the Tiger mountains. Tuesday morning Col. Hoffman, Lieut. Col. West and Major Herr left the main camp with Robinson Starr, the captured fullblood, government officials and Interpreter Tiger andmatched from Hickory ground to Pierce, Last night the troops left Pierce and are today scouring the Tiger mountains for some trace of Crazy Snake.Odom Withdraws Men.Sheriff Odom of McIntosh county has notified Col. Hoffman that in the event Harjo is captured that he will be given a civil trial and no attempts will be made on his life. Indian Agent Kelsey, who spent yesterday in camp, returned to Muskogee last night, after a consultation with Maj, Charlie Barrett, who is in charge of the main camp in the absence of Col. Hoffman. Mr. Kelsey, on behalfof the government, offered to lend every assistance in enforcing the civil law so long as no “snap judgment'” -was taken on Snake and his men. Sheriff Odom 'has practically withdrawn his men, who are now merely acting as scouts and working in conjunction with the militia.(Continued on Page Five.)
