To those who have known Miss Helen Brice it will not be difficult to convey an idea of what her mother has been, for when j at the Western she was very similar to what her daughter is today, and above all she had the same charming attractiveness, what may be described as “having a way’5 It hat caught (and held) one’s heart. The romance of Mrs. Brice's life was not begun in that little village of the “Ford of the 0*,?t only continued, for between sawing and splitting wood for his fire* and cramming Greek tragedies, a certain student of old Ivhami found time to plod very often the long dusty ioa«l which stretched itself from the college campus to the Western grounds.After commenting at length on the munificent gifts to old Miami and, the Western by both Mr. and Mrs. Brice tlic writer ends by saying.Each year Mrs. Brice attends the commencement exercises at the Western. These addresses are invariably written in the “wee sma’ hours” after midnight of the day precedinglthe gathering of the class, and are most finished and scholarly* The time seems all too limited for their “powwows4* over the old school days as the queer old “bus or Longfellow drops one and another of the alutnmv at the Western door, and, add to that earnest plans always in the cards for the new girls, and the reason is very apparent why Mrs. Brice must be literally driven to her room on the stroke of 12 to prepare her morrow's discourse.Mrs. Brice giaduated :n high standing at the Western in 66, and in ’71 the building was for the second time consumed by fire, onlv to rise from the ashes as indomitably as beiore, in greater beauty, and with a more extended influence. !
