Boating on the Middle and Upper Columbia.From remimscenscs published in the Salem Statesman we learu the following regarding carlv stcaraboating on the Columbia, ou what is known as the middle and upper river:In I SC 3 the People’s Transportation Company was formed, uml soou thereat ter built three boats to ruu on the Columbia— the t\ D. Baker, from Portland to the Cascades; the /ri#, from there to The Dalles; and the Cayusr.t above The Dalles to Lewiston, Idaho. Stephen Coffin was president of the company, Air. Kingsley vice president, and Davi . and Asa McCuily and E. N. Coox directors. There were stockholders in Eugene, Albany, Salem, Portland, and at most all the points ou the two rivers reacbeu by the boats—05 stockholders in all. David McCuily had moved to Salem in 1858. The old Oregon Steam Navigation Company was giving the People’s Company very stiff opposi tiou on the two rivers, and the latter was in debt, so the secretary reported, some $50,000. Asa and David McCuily, E. N. Cooke and Mr. Church, of Salem, proposed to raise $50,000, pay off the debts and lake a mortgage on the company’s property. This wasreclily accepted, hut the debts were found to be about $65,000, and, had these four backers realized lh‘s, they would not have undertaken the venture. In about three weeks the late W. S. i«add called on David McCuily at the company's office aud proposed some deal I whereby the People’s Company uud the O. S. N. Co. would not be cutting one another’s throats, as the latter company was also losing money and in debt. The result was that in June, 1SG3, they (the People’s) traded the Iris and the Cayuse for the Onward and two other ol the O. S. N’s Willamette boats, and got $10,000 to booL /
