“ It is an unusual thing for a lawyer to be taken in by a horse-dealer,” quoth the Regi trar of the Birmingham County Court, according to 1 eBirmingham, Daily Gazette. “ But the revelations in the case of Mr. 5Charles Francis dale prove that when this unusual thing happens the lawyer is taken in very thoroughly. The strange story of how Mr. Gale lost lt;£30,000 in six years would make a good companion work to the classical volume supposed to have been written by the Jubilee Plunger. But whereas Mr. Benzon had lost a fortune because he was reckless, Mr. Gale lost a competency in spite of a long legal experience. Peoplewit' moderate incomes may wonder how this difficult feat can be so suc-cessfully accomplished, and the answer, if it came from Mr. Gale, would be ‘Lend money to a friend.’ That is what he did. He had lt;£10J*()0 laid by, and a person named Baker came along and borrowed it. Presently Mr. Baker wanted more, and he got it. 1 It is the old story overagain,’ said Mr. Gale in the course of his examination. ‘ I kept a^Yanlt;^’ in him money to buy horses until I found that he owed money to others, and then 1 paid out executions which had been issued against him. He was sued by several people who had trusted horses to him for sale, and whom he had not paic I kept on advancing money till I got rather deep, an( then to try and get out I advanced more and more money till here I am. It always follows with a fool like me.’ The latter admission anticipates any comment we might have been Inclined to make in regard to the deluclec !' it i tuous lender. Nevertheless, some little sympathy will be felt ioi a man like Mr. Gale, who up to a late period in his life was an honoured member of an honourable profession. He kept on lending more m io hope of getting back his own, for his one chance of escaping ruin was iy keeping Baker in such a position that he might ultimately be able to return the loan. As the registrar said, it was a painful and lamentai -case, for not only is Mr. Gale bankrupt, but it is probable that he has m his desperates desires to save his money laid himself open to serious charges which he may be called upon to answer in another court.
