,'500*Milf* I*cit!i of Death.DestructionTOKYO JP —- Violent typhoon.Tune cut a 300-mile wide path ofdeath and destruction across the futhem Japanese mainland today.At least nine persons were dead, eight missing and 5,3ht homeless, Kvdo News Service reported.The howling storm slammed into teeming Kyushu Island with windsof up to 110 miles an hour. Winds slackened to 90 miles an hour as the typhoon roared inland.Three southern Kyushu cities,lathed by an 88-mile-an-bour wind,tidal waves and eloudhurst rains, were evacuated. They are Miyazaki. with 120,000 residents: Miya-konojo, 75.000; and Nobeoka 88,-000.The newspaper Yomiuri said a flash flood may have virtually wiped out Miyakonojo.{ The U, S. Air Force said the storm center, lumbering north* a st-ward at 17 miles an hour, would move across western Honshu and into the ‘.Sea of Japan Tuesday.Its present course would carry 'he storm through Hiroshima, hut if would miss the populous cen-i ters of Osaka and Tokyo.Weather experts described thestorm as even more powerful than 'he 19.11 typhoon Muroto, worst in i Japan's history. Muroto killed more than 2.000 people and demolished 10.000 homes.
