New radio offering religious music primarily for adultsBv JOHN CREEDStaff WriterA Christian radio station joined Interior Alaska airwaves at the be ginning of October, offering primarily religious music for adults.‘ We'd been talking about it for years, and it’s finally happened,” said Gary Wells, an announcer for KUWL-FM, located at the Lighthouse Christian Center at 215 Knif fen Drive in Fairbanks. The station can be found at 91.5 on the FM radio dial 24 hours a day.KUWL's format includes Christian contemporary music for adults and ‘‘easy listening,” said station manager John Snider.Among the featured recording artists will be entertainers such as Russ Taff, Phillip Bailey, Sandi Patti, Randy Stonehill, Amy Grant. Joe English. DeGarmo and Key, Silver Wind. Michael W. Smith and Petra.Four men comprise the station's board of directors: Snider, Jack Benson, Jerry Colp and Alan Cor rick. Snider said the station is owned by the Fairbanks EducationalBroadcasting Foundation Inc There are no legal ties between that corporation and Light House Christian Center corporation, but there is a crossover of the board of directors, to keep us heading in the right direction,” he said, adding that the regulations are similar to public television and public radio.There will be no commercials,” Wells said, but we can make donoracknowledgements, like PBS.” But we don’t want to keep inter rupting programming with donor acknowledgement.” Snider said. And we want to stay away from telethons.”Local people have been putting serious effort into the station for about a year. Wells said, including filing the paperwork with the FederalCommunications Commission.The non profit group managed to raise about $40,000 to get the station off the ground, Snider said.People from other churches in town did help out quite a bit.” he said, There are quite a few people with similar convictions in this town, so as a result, we've receiveda lot of help in that way.”The station's signals will reach the greater Fairbanks area. Snider said, and as far away as 21 Mile Steese Highway.It gets a little patchy out by Eielson,” he said.The station will generate no local news, but will broadcast national and international news brought in by satellite.We have contracted with CNN (Cable News Network) to providenews,” he said. “We’ll probably use that once an hour. We don't expect to go heavy into news.”KUWL also will produce local interest programming, Snider said, such as public affairs interviews.An open house is scheduled today from 1:30 to 5 p.m. There will be refreshments and other local radio personalities will be present. Newly elected Borough Mayor Juanita Helms will cut the ribbon.” Snider said.The public is welcome.
